I have a confirmed twin pregnancy at 6 1/2 weeks. But why do people ask how did I get them?

Question by Pregnant with Twins!: I have a confirmed twin pregnancy at 6 1/2 weeks. But why do people ask how did I get them?
Alot of people at work keep asking me do I have twins in my family or did we use fertility treatments. We did use fertility treatments but its not everyone's business. How would you go about telling people that its not their business in a polite way?

What do you think?

  1. Congrats! :) Just tell them something like ” Sometimes things just happen!” And subtly change the subject.

  2. just say it was a completely pleasant surprise. you dont have to tell anyone you used fertility treatments.

  3. I got that question a lot. I know it’s out of curiosity, but that’s a personal question to ask. I would sarcastically remark “magic” or something of the sort :) If you’re that uncomfortable with the fact that it was probably a result of a fertility treatment, just say they’re in the family. Not really lying, your twins ARE in the family now <3

  4. First of all it’s not that common to have twins. So many people chalk it up to fertility treatments.

If you are too defensive, then people will know the answer just by the tone of your voice. I’d just say something like this “Mother nature blessed me twice!”

Remember someone who has nothing to hide, hides nothing.

“The lady doth protest too much, methinks.”

I had to have fertility help to have my 4 sons. I get pregnant, no problem, but habitually miscarry due to insufficient progesterone levels. I’ve never found anybody who was not supportive. It is nothing to be ashamed of.

  5. Back then they didn’t have “early dating” scans so I didn’t find out until I was 16 weeks when we found 2 heart beats – at which point they did an immediate scan and confirmed

  6. People ask simply because they’re curious. Twins aren’t that common, although they are more common than they used to be, and people like to find out more about them. All you have to do is tell them that it was a complete surprise when you found out and change the subject.

But, I do have to warn you, prepare yourself for a batter of questions for a long time. You’ll be asked “Oh, are they identical?”, have comments such as “You’re so lucky to have twins” or “I wish I could have twins, do they run in your family?”. Most parents of twins find themselves very annoyed when they take them out in public together because people are curious about them.

    Congratulations!

  7. There’s an old saying that goes: There are no embarrassing questions, only embarrassing answers.

    I’d say something like:
    Why do you ask?
Why would you ask me such a personal question?
    I beg your pardon?!?!
    That’s a private matter.

    Or…you can go humorous:
It must have been the Superman costume that my husband was wearing that night.
Well, we had sex twice that night…maybe that’s it. What do you think?
Oh, I wish I knew…so I’ll never do it again. Twins! How will I pay for 2 college educations?
