Question by Katie: How did doctors confirm a twin pregnancy in the 1960's?
I'm researching for a story and was wondering how twins would be confirmed back in the 60's. I know ultrasounds weren't widely used even my sister who had twins in 1983 said she never had an ultrasound and didn't find out she was having twins until she delivered, but this can't always be the case.

Answer by thing one AND thing two:)
They didn't:) Sometimes the doctor could feel around, and take an 'educated guess' that she was going to, but they were never really positive. Luckily they had ultrasounds when I had mine! Can't even imagine...

Honestly, Im not sure but my grandmother had twins in 1964 and as far as I know, she didn’t know it until 2 babies came out.. I could be wrong though.
Yeah it is, they just had to wait until the delivery, the docs could say they thought it was twins by how much weight she was carrying but my sis was over 11lbs at birth and that would be misconstrued as twins back then
They didn’t always find out, but generally the uterus would be growing too large too rapidly and they would make an educated guess. They could also locate two heart beats in later pregnancy using stethoscopes.
I’m with Jill on this. I know that in the 60s they did a blood test to detect pregnancy, though the test wasn’t always accurate. As for twins, they would just have to wait and see if there was one baby or more than one. And yes, they should certainly have been able to detect both heart-beats with a stethoscope.
