Has anyone ever heard of a twin pregnancy that in week 5 one of the babys could be a “disapearing twin”?

Question by knowitall: Has anyone ever heard of a twin pregnancy that in week 5 one of the babys could be a "disapearing twin"?
My friend is in week 5 of her pregnancy. The doctors are seeing two seperate sacs. That would normally tell you that they are twins right? Well for some reason the doctors at the ER are telling her that it is so early that it could be a false reading on the ultrasound, and that one of the twins could be a "disapearing twin". Never heard of this could someone help me out please so that I can help her.

Why is she having an u/s in the ER and not at her OB's office? ER doctors tend to give information that can be scary and leading...which is why you should ALWAYS follow up woth yuor doctor. They're basically trying to cover their own asses in case something goes wrong.

But yes, it can happen that one won't be viable and will "vanish," leaving the woman pregnant with one fetus.

What do you think? Answer below!

  1. my sister in law had a twin that disappeared. it was really early on in her pregnancy and now that her daughter is 5 months we joke that her little girl didnt want to share her room :)

  2. yes heard of it
but she should be having another u/s at 6weeks to see the heart beat during that time they will be able to tell her if their is 2 heart beat or 1
    Good luck to her

  3. Most people are born twins. It is not rare. We just absorb the other one. Sounds gross but survival of the fittest.

  4. I’ve heard of it, this is basically where one twin dies or never developed but a second sac did. its rare but it does happen, your friend should wait longer before assuming that she lost one of her twins at 5 weeks it can be hard to even see a single fetus on ultrasound.

  5. A vanishing twin (or disappearing twin) is part of Vanishing Twin Syndrome (VTS). VTS occurs when one of a set of twins spontaneously disappears during pregnancy, and normally results in a single birth. What really happens is that one of the twins aborts and is absorbed by the remaining twin, the placenta or the Mother. Some estimates say that as many as 1 in 8 births started out as a twin while only 1 in 70 will actually be born as twins.

  6. “Many people learn about their multiples at an early ultrasound. Although some critics say that before twelve weeks gestation there is still a high risk of Disappearing Twin Syndrome, where one baby stops growing and is either absorbed back into the mother’s body or is still born when the other twin is born.”

    Hope that helped….

  7. Many pregnancies begin as a twin pregnancy. However, it is reasonably common for one of the fetuses, at such an early stage, to become un-viable and basically be reabsorbed.

Scans at such early stages can see these things, but I can assure you, those of us who were not scanned at this time, were left blissfully unaware and still went on to have healthy full term singleton babies.

Think of it as part of the natural selection process, but you may want to reword this information a little more delicately for her….

  8. yeah, i had one, its where one of the twins are miscarried but the other one is still there basically. It does not effect the other twin in anyway. My son is actually a very bright wonderful little man!

  9. When my mother was preggo with me she found out she was having twins, buuuutttt, only I came out of the deal. Its really common, and from what I can tell most babies start out as twins and only one fetus survives. Just tell her that what happens happens, and it is for the best. Its really common. And to not get too worked up over it because those babies or that baby can feel everything she is feeling.

  10. yes it is when one baby does not develop and just fades away into the lining and is passed out in the after birth, itg is very common . one baby ususally takes all the nutrients and causes the other to not develop probally. i am sorry of that happened to your friend
