Study Finds Link Between Asthma Symptoms and Menstruation in Women

Swiss researchers have found a significant increase of bronchial hyper-reactivity (BHR) in women shortly before or during the first days of their menstruation. The effect was seen in both asthmatic and non-asthmatic women. The study, which will be published in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, looked at the effect of the menstrual cycle, specifically in the days around the start of monthly menstruation, on BHR.

For decades, doctors have questioned whether or not premenstrual asthma exists. Evidence of an increase in asthma at female puberty and of changes in asthma symptom severity during pregnancy had already been found. But previous studies of the hormone-asthma relationship at specific phases of the menstrual cycle had been inconclusive.

The Swiss study also found that women who were taking oral contraceptives showed a decreased risk for this BHR, suggesting that hormone therapy may have a protective effect. The findings could help clinicians find ways to modify medication use during the menstrual cycle to achieve better asthma control for female asthmatics.

Pregnancy Week 3: Signs & Symptoms

Although you still do not know you're pregnant, your baby has completed its first week of life and continues to grow and develop. For nurturing and protecting the fetus, placenta has formed. Your baby now measures up to 0.1 cm.

Physical and emotional changes in the mother: Your uterus starts to grow

With the start of this week, the fertilized egg gets implanted on the wall of the uterus, and this is the first time that the menstruation cycle disappears. you may feel small abdominal discomfort similar to premenstrual. this will surely make you think that your periods are going to start but do not worry, this is indication that the uterus is growing. you may also feel tenderness in the breasts and sleep more than usual.

Tip of the week

Taking drugs and drinking alcohol even in a moderate amount can cause birth defects, both physical and mental. more likely, you don’t know that you are pregnant in the early days of pregnancy as the signs and symptoms are subtle, you must try to avoid such habits as much as you can.

If you are taking any medication, do not forget to consult your doctor first (you should have seen a doctor and had an ultrasound by now). Consulting your doctor will help avoid any complications during pregnancy.

To fulfil the nutritious requirements for you and your baby, you should take adequate amounts of folic acid.

One of the biggest problems during pregnancy for about 80% of women, is the debilitating effects of morning sickness and trying to find safe, morning sickness remedies and cures for the pregnancy nausea. these two items above, will allow you to completely enjoy this blessed time.

The good new is...here are my tried and true remedies. They work like a charm and got me through two pregnancies feeling great the whole time!

It goes without saying, that we do NOT know enough of the cellular growth of your baby in utero to be sure that any drug is safe. We do know, though, many herbal remedies and most homeopathics are completely safe. these make life so much more enjoyable throughout your pregnancy and let you carry on..living your life, while you wallow in this very special time.

When does Morning Sickness start?

Morning sickness symptoms can start as early as four weeks into pregnancy and peak at about twelve weeks. The majority of women are over it by fourteen weeks. however, there are some unfortunates who suffer throughout the whole nine months.

It's actually mis-named as it can occur anytime during the day or night, it's just more common in the morning.

Its not all bad, though..watch this:

There doesn't seem to be one reason for morning sickness; one of the theories is that morning sickness is caused by the dominant hormone during pregnancy, progesterone.

Progesterone has a "softening" effect on the muscles in the body. it is thought it helps prevent preterm labor by effecting the uterine muscles. it also effects other muscles, such as the stomach and intestines. The progesterone relaxes the workings of the whole digestive track which makes the elimination of bodily wastes slower which can lead to a slow emptying of the stomach which leads to excess stomach acids.

Another theory, and more widely accepted, is that morning sickness is caused by the buildup of hCG (human chorionic gonadotopin) in your system. hCG is produced after implantation takes place and continues to increase until about the 12th week of your pregnancy, at which point the levels of hCG starts to decrease. if you are lucky, this is when your morning sickness symptoms will start to decrease as well.

Signs - Early Pregnancy.. 2) Missed Period/Spotting

As obvious as this seems, a missed period often heralds pregnancy. many women though, experience a change in flow and not complete stoppage. if your cycle is late or it's much lighter and you're having some of the other symptoms I list here, take a home pregnancy test or see your physician.

3) Breast Changes/Tenderness

As early as one or two weeks after conception (so possibly before your period is missed) most women experience breast swelling, tenderness and even itchiness as the breasts start to enlarge..getting ready to feed the baby. most of the time your nipples and the aerolas (pigmented skin around the nipple) will start to darken. This is perfectly normal..just a reaction to the hormonal changes your body is going through.

4) Fatigue

You feel completely wiped? Yup..that's pregnancy fatigue. It's just devastating. Then vanishes at about 12 weeks. becomes more 'normal' fatigue. it too, is associated with the high amounts of progesterone in your body at the beginning of pregnancy.

5) Urinating Frequently

When the embryo implants, it causes the secrection of hCG - human chorionic gonadotropin hormone. Around six to eight weeks after conception it raises enough to have an effect on making you run to the washroom more often to piddle. Don't forget..you're eliminating toxins for two, now.

6) Backaches/Headaches

The occurence of headaces and backaches as pregnancy symptoms early in the first trimester is not a common as more towards the end of the second and into the third. your body secretes a hormone call Relaxin..preparing you for birth and the expansion of the pelvic bones which will be needed, but this affects other joints as well. it tends to make them 'sloppy' leading to irritation and pain. The other hormonal changes add to the headache problem, and probably earlier than the backaches.

7) Mood Changes

Many women have an intuition about being pregnant..they just 'feel' it. often the trigger is moodiness, queasiness, being slightly 'out-of-sorts'. there could be a rapid change in mood from happiness to crankiness. Pregnancy hormones are responsible and of course, affect every woman differently.

8) Constipation

A common problem in pregnancy..early signs may not include it, but it can worsen as the pregnancy progresses. your digestive tract slows down to absorb more nutrients for the growing baby and your water metabolism changes. A safe remedy is to include ground organic flax into your diet by either mixing it into water and drinking it or even sprinkle it on your cereal. take this a couple of hours away from any supplements to avoid the binding of your minerals.

Just a note....NaturalEco carries a whole line of chemical free bedding, mattresses, toys, etc. for your baby. It's SO important because the chemicals normally added to fabrics are very toxic to your infant. their immune systems just aren't ready to deal with them...and their small body weight makes them many times more susceptible to toxins of any kind.

There are also a whole line of conception, pregnancy, birth and nursing remedies...I highly recommend them. They are safe, effective and completely withouth side effects.
