Obese Females at a Higher Risk of Pregnancy Complications

A recent study has revealed that overweight females are more at risk of pregnancy problems and face a threat of having abnormally large babies. These risks prevail even if the effects of diabetes are considered.

Also, the chances of suffering from a pregnancy complication pre-eclampsia are likely to be 14 times more in obese than a normal female.

The babies therefore born from obese mothers suffer a greater risk of injuries while being born including shoulder dislocation.

It was found in the research that females with 42 or more Body Mass Index BMI can be three times more at a risk of having very bulky babies.

Dr Boyd E. Metzger said that the weight of females before they get pregnant was the determining factor for the pregnancy complications rather than the weight gained during pregnancy. I

n this research, 23,316 women were tested from 15 medical centers in 9 countries and were tested for oral glucose tolerance test in order to detect the possible risks in pregnancies.
