What is Bicornuate Uterus Infertility
Bicornuate Uterus has a two part shape, like two horns instead of a single whole uterus. Unfortunately, Bicornuate Uterus is mostly a birth defect. Pregnancy cannot be carried successfully even if the fertilized egg is implanted. this is because the uterus horns do not have the normal tissue to support the egg and the pregnancy. this could result in miscarriage, early or pre-term delivery, retarded growth of the fetus and could lead to various birth defects in the baby.
A bicornuate uterus can be diagnosed by either of several methods such as ultrasound, MRI, HSG, hysteroscopy, or laparascopy.Bicornuate Uterus Pregnancy Complications
There are very good chances that the malformed uterus is not detected in the early stages. in a lot of cases pregnancy in women with the protruded uterus does not reach its full term. Some women may carry their pregnancies fully without their doctor even realizing that they have a defective uterus.
Sometimes the mother may feel cramped and may spot, which could trigger an investigation revealing the condition.
an ultrasound scan can detect the bicornuate uterus. in most cases when the baby is implanted in the protruded horn, there is not enough room for it to grow. According to research, there is about 60% survival rate of the fetus under this condition.
Another Complication of Bicornuate Uterus: The chances of pre-term delivery is increased due to the fact that there is not room for growth and the baby does find itself adjusting in the normal head-down position.
The crammed space in the uterus may also cause fetal growth retardation. this means that the baby is much smaller than its normal size and weight. in such cases the baby may either not survive or may be delivered prematurely with various birth defects.
In short, Bicornuate Uterus could one of the causes for female infertility. Although the woman can conceive, she will face numerous complications to carry on with the pregnancy and deliver successfully.

March 24th, 2010 at 5:22 amIt is possible to detect bicornuate uterus with modern instruments available now a days easily.
One such instrument is MRI or magnetic resonance imaging. It helps in differentiating normal and abnormal human anatomy.
Gives varied pathology of the uterus like fibroids, polyps, myomas.
The other imaginary technique is ultrasound; its use is not limited up to abnormal menses, pelvic inflammatory disease, intrauterine device etc.
With the introduction of 3D ultrasonography multiple planes can be displayed of the uterus and its surrounding to detect any abnormality.Reply this Comment

March 24th, 2010 at 6:09 amThere are different ways, in which the uterus can be shaped than normal (by nature), one such form is bicornuate uterus, and it is a birth abnormality where uterus is divided in two horns joined in the upper portion forming a heart shape.
As seen in many bicornuate uterus pregnancies there is less room for the baby to grow due to the protrusion of the horn. due to this there is growth retardation of the baby as well as retardation of the height. The chances of pre term delivery also increases and a pre term baby is always less in weight compared to a full term baby.
In short such babies may have growth retardation defectsReply this Comment
